Darnell Leak began his Martial Arts in September 1963 in an old Korean art of Kong Soo Do under Master Park Soo Kim. After Master Kim left, Master Leak continued his training under other instructors at the Y.M.C.A. in Greenwood, South Carolina.
In 1970 he joined The United States Marine Corp. leaving Paris Island, S.C., he went to Camp Pendelton in California, where he studied Isshin-Ryu on base. In nearby Oceanside, California he met Ted Mason and Howard Jackson and began studying Tang Soo Do. Later in L.A. he studied with Steve Sanders in the art of Kempo.

Master Leak went to Okinawa where he devoted himself to the Martial Arts studies, mainly Shobayashi Shorin-Ryu under Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro, also Okinawan Kempo under Grandmaster Sechichi Odo , Judo and Aikido.
Moving back to South Carolina in 1974 Master Leak began teaching Martial Arts where he had studied at the Y.M.C.A. and later at the Seaboard Recreation Center. He began going to tournaments. At a tournament in Spartanburg, South Carolina he met Ronnie Barkoot. In 1976 he joined the Barkoot Competition team which retired undefeated.
In 1980 he met Master Sung Duk Cho, again started training in Tang Soo Do and became the United States Grand Champion in 1982, in the United States Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, among many other accomplishments.
